It seems that it has been awhile since that I've written anything worthy of my vast readership, only wallowing in my own Weltschmerz. In my self-indulgent wayward apathy I have overlooked one of the reasons I started writing here: to spread positive vibrations to anyone willing to read then listen.
The drums and keyboards duo of the Benevento / Russo Duo, or simply The Duo, followed up their critically acclaimed (click, then scroll down) 2005 Ropeadope release, with something a little more better of the same. Caught somewhere between the jamband and jazz, The Duo grooves, allowing Play Pause Stop to continue to etch the group into a genre all to their own. Just as Best Reason To Buy The Sun seemed to be made to fit the environs in which I lived, PPS does exactly the same in match-making music, myself, and environs into one. The album lilts on the last wave of summer, never allowing the sun to drop beyond the horizon. The opening title track gradually gathers steam with vaunted, echoing voices in the background, and unfurls like waves and seeps onto the shore. "Echo Park" pulls you out away from the shore and rides you across the waves at top speed. All you can feel is the sun on your face and the air rushing by, never wanting the moment to end. "Soba," the previous album's title track "Best Reason To Buy The Sun," "Powder," and "Something For Rockets" make you believe that it never will. Each track insistent and unceasing in its comforting, cruising speed. Before its soothing finish, "Walking, Running, Viking" and "Hate Frame" get discordant and raucous, thrashing you about in the waves. To close, "Memphis" lays you back down on the sand to bask in the glory of the sun.
I highly doubt anyone would have the same experience I have had with The Duo's last two albums. One seemed to be made for desert living, and the next for the ocean waves. What I think you'll find is that whatever your own surroundings, the Benevento/Russo Duo will match fit you with your environs, making you believe the album was made for you, and you only. Its a beautiful feeling where ever you may be.
